STATE of the SOIL Virtual Town Hall

We’re 2 days away from the first community town hall to address the State of the Soil in Los Angeles after the LA fires. Local government, rebuild groups and community activists have not focused on this critical component of LA’s comeback because it’s not in their wheelhouse. 

How we remediate our soil is so important for the health and safety of the future of Los Angeles. 

How are you going to remediate your soil? Who is going to remediate your soil? Can you remediate the soil at your home or property? 

Those questions and many more will be answered during the town hall. 

The STATE of the SOIL Virtual Town Hall is for all of Los Angeles - for those affected by the Eaton and Palisades Fires, as well as Angelenos living on the periphery of the fire zones or within 25 miles to them. Sadly, we have all been affected. 

We will discuss testing, what you should be testing for and why. Most of the testing has focused on lead. Did you know that lead is relatively easy to deal with in the soil? Has anyone warned you that the toxic chemical compounds that are in your soil from VOCs, PFAs, PHA’s and asbestos are not so easy to remediate? 

Are you testing? Have you tested? What lab is doing your testing? Do you think that the FREE testing that is being offered is enough? 

The truth is that the toxins in the soil will not just go away by themselves, and it would take decades for the soil biology to come back to the point that nature could heal your soil and the environment around you. We must help rebuild the biology in our soil. We have to remove the toxicity from our land if we are to restore it to health so that we can safely rebuild, move home, or cleanse the soil, gardens and landscapes throughout the city and county of LA. 

Why isn’t anyone in power talking about this? Is it possible that the soil at my home isn’t contaminated? What’s the bare minimum I need to do to fix the soil in my yard? Is there a bare minimum? How much is it going to cost?
